Optimising the computational domain size in CFD simulations of tall buildings

Abstract Recently, there has been a growing interest in utilizing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for wind resistant design of tall buildings. A key factor that influences the accuracy and expense CFD simulations is size domain. In this paper, effect domain on predictions loads buildings investigated with series sensitivity studies. Four distinct sources error are identified which include wind-blocking effects caused by short upstream length, flow recirculation due to insufficient downstream global venturi large blockage ratios, local clearance between building top lateral boundaries. Domains based engineering guidelines found be overly conservative when applied buildings, resulting uneconomic grids cell count. framework optimizing proposed monitoring output metrics variations dimensions. The findings paper help inform modellers potential issues simulations.
